Stroke Intervention
Some patients who suffer from an acute stroke may have a blood clot in an artery in the brain. If that is the case, a small catheter can be inserted into that artery, and a thrombolytic drug (clot buster) delivered directly to the site of the blood clot. This procedure is performed by the same method as cardiac catheterization, and if successful, can abort the stroke. This is a highly specialized procedure which should be performed by an experienced stroke team.
